GlobalFit interviewed employees of all ages and identities to learn about how they live our mission of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both in and out of the office. Here’s what they had to say.

GF: Thanks for volunteering your time today. Can you please introduce yourself and your role at GlobalFit?

S: I’m Samantha Bluj, a Registered Dietitian with CHARGE

GF: Hi Samantha! What does a “healthy lifestyle” mean to you?

S: A healthy lifestyle is maintaining a mix of balanced eating, relaxation and exercise.

GF: When did you begin focusing on a healthy lifestyle and why?

S: I really started living a healthier lifestyle when I started working for The Charge Group. My previous job was VERY stressful and taking a lot out of me, so a change of pace was the first step! From there, eating healthier and exercise naturally fell into place because I had the time to create the habit.

GF: How do you stay physically active?

S: If I'm not training for a race, I am sure to include lots of variety in my workout routine to keep it interesting! My weekly workouts include a nice mix of running, yoga, pilates reformer, rebounder, and toning classes.

GF: How do you practice mindfulness or mental “fitness?”

S: My nighttime routine is a crucial part of practicing mindfulness. I am sure to give myself enough time at the end of the day to unwind, have a cup of calming tea and fully relax before trying to go to bed. Part of this also includes reflecting on my day and setting personal and professional intentions for the next.

GF: Does your wellness routine include a certain way of eating? If so, can you describe it?

S: I try to eat as intuitively as possible while keeping the healthy food groups in mind. This means that while I'm always trying to find ways to get in more fruits, veggies, and whole grains, I still enjoy a dinner out with my friends and family when those opportunities arise. Even if that means pizza night!

GF: How do you make time for your wellness routine amidst work, family, and other responsibilities?

S: Planning, planning and more planning! I am sure to include all aspects of wellness into my week and schedule them like an appointment! This not only includes workouts, but it includes my hobbies that keep me sane such as reading. It also includes prepping lunches and getting to the grocery store. When these weekly to-dos are mapped out, it makes me realize that I have more time than I thought I did.

GF: In regards to your wellness routine, what have you tried before that didn't work for you, and why not?

S: As a registered dietitian, I have tested out some common diet trends to see what it's really like from the client's point of view. I have found that the more restrictive I am, the more I struggle to be successful. I also feel more stressed and less energized which makes it harder to maintain an exercise routine.

GF: What does it take for you to be consistent in your wellness routine?

S: My schedule for work is always changing so scheduling those "Healthy Lifestyle" related appointments for myself to keep it in sight and therefore in mind. Adequate rest time is also another crucial component in maintaining consistency. If I don't sleep well or feel too overwhelmed about something, I am less likely to workout or eat healthy.

GF: What are your top three tips for someone looking to live a more healthy lifestyle?

S: 1. HONOR YOUR HUNGER: Don't avoid eating just because you don't think it's "time." Letting yourself get too hungry can lead to poor food decisions, not because of lack of willpower, but because of the physiological factors that are pushing you towards those "not so healthy" or "comfort" foods. If you're feeling hungry, try to consume a balanced snack or meal such as fruit and nuts or a hummus and cucumber sandwich.
2. Always remember that REST TIME IS PRODUCTIVE: Sleep and taking time to simply relax is the foundation in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
3. ENJOY your exercise: Experiment with different types of exercise until you find that one (or a few) that you truly enjoy. Find the class, gym or at home workout that you finish and feel accomplished and rejuvenated and use that as your motivating factor.

GF: Anything else you want to mention?

S: For me, the biggest takeaway tip I think of everyday is to "Listen to your body." Rest when you need to rest. Exercise when you feel energized. Eat healthy when you can, but truly enjoy your treats and special occasions too!
