Employee Health Spotlight: Marquita V. Davis

By Jordi Wallen
GlobalFit interviewed employees of all ages and identities to learn about how they live our mission of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, both in and out of the office. Here’s what they had to say.

GF: Thanks for volunteering your time today. Can you please introduce yourself and your role at GlobalFit?

M: I’m Marquita V. Davis and I’m a Jr. Accountant for GlobalFit.

GF: Hi Marquita! What does a “healthy lifestyle” mean to you?

M: To me a healthy lifestyle means a balanced diet, hydration, exercise, and rest.

GF: When did you begin focusing on a healthy lifestyle and why?

M: I began a healthy lifestyle approximately 21 years ago. Initially I felt like I was getting "flabby", but then realized benefits of exercise other than vanity such as healthy digestion, mobility, and strength.

GF: How do you stay physically active?

M: I enjoy lifting weights, incorporating some crossfit, and boxing.

GF: How do you practice mindfulness or mental “fitness?”

M: Prayer and meditation are important to me, with or without music or nature sounds.

GF: Does your wellness routine include a certain way of eating? If so, can you describe it?

M: My dietary routine includes leafy vegetables, seafood and poultry, and multigrains. Products containing gluten are avoided or kept to a minimum as well as products containing artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup.

GF: How do you make time for your wellness routine amidst work, family, and other responsibilities?

M: I have a small gym set up in my home, as well as two gym memberships that allow me to work out in the mornings before work, during my lunch hour, and after work depending on my schedule for the day.

GF: In regards to your wellness routine, what have you tried before that didn't work for you, and why not?

M: Working out, lifting weights for more than 4 hours per day without replenishing my body with the proper nutrients to allow muscles to repair and grow.

GF: What does it take for you to be consistent in your wellness routine?

M: Waking up, knowing that I want to remain flexible and healthy, mentally, physically, and emotionally

GF: What are your top three tips for someone looking to live a more healthy lifestyle?

M: Take your time, do not jump into a "diet," gradually change eating habits to include healthier choices and smaller portions. Working out moderately, approximately 3 times a week for no more than 1 hour is enough to begin a healthy lifestyle. The most important is that results are not immediate, everything takes time and effort.

GF: Anything else you want to mention?

M: Never overwork your body and avoid stress as much as possible.
